First circular and call for papers

Dear Colleagues,



Archaeological Museum in Biskupin and State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw (Poland) and Arbeitsgruppe Teerschwele in Museumsdorf Düppel (Berlin, Germany) intend to organize the Second International Symposium on Wood Tar and Pitch, to be held in Archaeological Museum in Biskupin, Poland, in October 11-13 of 2012.

18 years have passed since the first wood tar & pitch symposium was organized also in Biskupin. A vast amount of new material on the subject has been gathered in the fields of archaeology, archaeometry and interdisciplinary sciences as well.

We shall be greatly obliged for your interest in the proposed event. We would also be very grateful if You decide to present a paper if possible. Therefore, we have allowed ourselves to include below a a provisional scheme of the symposium, to be devoted to all aspects of the subject of wood dry distillation:

- Early History and History

- Archaeometry (Analysis and Restoration)

- Methods: tar kiln, double-pot method, tar-pit, grease oven slabs, pitchstones, other non-ceramic methods, modern pyrolysis

- Interdisciplinary themes - application, medicine, ethnology and ethnography, education and popular-scientific activity, linguistics, trade and commerce and others

- Experimental archaeology

- Posters.


Symposium language – English

Deadline for lecture proposals – 31 March 2012


Lecturers are free of charge, other participants – 200zł or 50 Euro (students 100zł or 25 Euro) – and this covers conference fee, conference materials, lunches between the sessions and get together event.
